Dyeing Day

Skeins of hand dyed and undyed yarn lay in front of jugs holding dye in various colours

We're holding another dyeing day!

30th September, 10am to 4pm

The Yarn Barn

Tilbrook Rd, Kimbolton, Huntingdon PE28 0JW, UK

Dyeing Day – Try Something New!

Come and spend a relaxed, colourful afternoon creating your own unique hand-dyed yarn.

Whether you’ve never dyed yarn before or you’ve joined us on a previous Dyeing Day, you can experiment with colour, learn how acid dyes work and create a skein that is completely your own.

Your session includes a full skein and a mini skein of undyed yarn to dye, with additional skeins and mini skeins available to buy on the day if you’d like to create a larger project or coordinating set.

Need some colour inspiration?

Have an idea in mind and you’re welcome to run with it – or delve into our new Inspiration Cards for colour combinations, themes and prompts to get you started. There’ll be some dyed examples too, so you can see how a prompt can be interpreted in completely different ways.

Been before? Try something different…

Alongside our usual dyeing, there’ll be a few optional challenges to play with:

Ugly Duckling – bring along a skein or ball of yarn from your stash that you’ve fallen out of love with and see if we can transform it with an overdye. If it’s in a ball, we can skein it ready for dyeing. Please check with me beforehand that the fibre is suitable for our dyes.

Pooling Yarn – have a go at deliberately placing colours around your skein to create repeating sections that can be used for colour-pooling techniques. You can dye additional skeins if you’d like enough for a larger project such as a shawl.

Build a Palette – add a mini skein or extra full skein and create coordinating, contrasting or accent colours to turn your dyed yarn into a project-ready set.

And if the weather decides to be kind to us, we may even get the solar dyeing equipment out again!

No previous dyeing experience is needed. All the equipment, dyes and protective equipment you’ll need during the session are provided. Please wear old clothes and/or bring an apron – dye has an unfortunate habit of reaching places you weren’t intending to dye!
